GUIDED TOUR OF SIENA
Departure by regional train from Rosignano train station, arrival in Siena and 2-hour guided tour of the city. We will visit one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the world.
We will start with the Basilica di San Domenico and discover the story of Saint Catherine, the patron saint of Italy. We will learn about the great history of this proud republic and the traditional Palio, a spectacular festival featuring a wild horse race around the Piazza del Campo, the city’s central square.
Our guide will tell us all about the Contrade (the city’s neighbourhoods) and how the people of Siena wait all year to participate in this incredible race.
We will stroll through the historic centre of Siena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and admire the magnificent architecture of Palazzo Salimbeni, now the oldest bank in the world, a testament to the wealth and commerce of the city’s glorious past. After that, we will visit Palazzo Tolomei, an imposing private building in the Gothic architectural style, and the main square with
its monuments and fountain.
Lastly, we will make our way to one of Italy’s most spectacular cathedrals, the Siena Cathedral. Our local guide will take us inside the cathedral to visit the chapels and see the impressive masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo and other artists, a building unforgettably rich in centuries of art and devotion.
Independent lunch and afternoon to be enjoyed at your leisure.
Departure at approx. 16:40 from Siena train station to return by regional train to Rosignano.
